DESCRIPTION:Artists Space presents “Multiple Offerings”\, the first retrospective in twenty-five years dedicated to the groundbreaking work of the artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. She produced an expansive range of works comprising performances for film and video\, installation\, photography\, artist’s books (including her genre-defying book Dictée from 1982)\, and works on paper\, which will fill Artists Space’s entire first floor. In her lifetime\, Cha contributed to experimental art scenes in New York City\, San Francisco\, Paris\, and beyond. Her work has had a quietly profound influence on subsequent generations of artists.

SUMMARY:Ideas for Cutting Bureaucratic Hurdles and Getting Things Done in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Mayor Mamdani’s Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) has put forward five promising ballot proposals to make city government work better\, faster\, and more efficiently. But there are numerous other opportunities to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that slow government down\, increase costs\, and make it harder to get things done in New York—many of which do not require charter changes. Identifying and reducing these frustrating\, costly\, and time-consuming bureaucratic rules and processes will be increasingly important at a time when the city faces massive policy challenges but also growing fiscal constraints. \nThis forum will explore specific opportunities to reduce outdated\, unnecessary\, and redundant bureaucratic hurdles across city government—from approvals at the Department of Buildings and FDNY to contracting\, procurement\, hiring\, and other core government processes. It will be a solutions-focused conversation that delves into rules and practices ripe for improvement and advances practical ideas for how city leaders can make these changes happen. It will discuss the ballot proposals put forward by COGE.

In this talk\, Dr. Chee Soon Juan discusses Singapore’s politico-economic vulnerabilities with insights from his new book Unbroken: The Power of Resilience. Drawing on both structural analysis of the system and personal experience of isolation and vilification\, he questions if the model can remain viable in the years ahead\, or is it headed for unravelling? The talk is of interest to all who are thinking about the relationship between neoliberalism and authoritarianism. It is especially relevant to Singaporeans abroad\, who must decide what role they will play in shaping the country’s next chapter.

SUMMARY:Our Stories Are Strength: A Conversation with Ly Tran\, Hunter Alum and Author of House of Sticks\, A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Ly Tran was a toddler when she and her family immigrated from a small town along the Mekong river in Vietnam to a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Queens. She grew up in NYC\, sewing ties and cummerbunds on the living room floor with her parents and three brothers to make ends meet. Despite many challenges\, Ly excelled in NYC public schools\, entered Hunter’s Macaulay Honors College\, and earned a 4.0 GPA in her first semester. After this\, her life took a downward turn and she dropped out. While she wrote in her memoir\, House of Sticks\, that she left Hunter\, “never to return again.” She’s back to share her powerful story with our students. \nLy’s life story is full of resilience\, self-discovery\, and love. At this event\, students and faculty will hear more of Tran’s story while also learning more about one another. All are welcome! You do not need to have read the book to join.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Recent Work by Hamid Dabashi
DESCRIPTION:In this book\, Hamid Dabashi offers a radical reconsideration of the parable in Persian literature\, arguing that parabolic thinking is a mode of philosophical reflection. Dabashi eschews the conventional focus on the supposed moral or political allusions in these parables—the “moral of the story”—to allow the radical surfaces of their poetic disposition to reveal themselves. He turns his attention instead to what Kafka called “the fabulous yonder” as the defining moment of the parable. Focusing on a sustained course of Persian parables through the ages\, Dabashi shows that the genre is not limited to masterpieces by such iconic poets as Sa’di\, Rumi\, Attar\, and Sana’i. In fact\, he argues\, parabolic thinking has a much wider domain in Persian literature and philosophy and plays a distinct role within Persian and Islamic traditions.
